The “news” was mostly gossip and joking about things that had happened.
The Viking Village demo was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed watching the indigo dye-pot’s oxidation reaction. we know that Vikings used a dye that contained indigotin, which is also found in woad, a dye plant indigenous to Europe. The Vikings could have easily traded for indigo extracts from China or Japan. We forgot lime to make the madder red. The madder dyed some really nice peachy colors despite that. We know that the Vikings definitely used madder, which is also indigenous to Europe. The weld gave a pretty nice yellow. We haven’t yet identified the yellow the Vikings dyed with; it could be that the plant is extinct. Watching Daria cook was almost as fun as eating the food after it was finished cooking. Yum, salmon! The period forge was interesting and I learned a lot. I didn’t know much about the science behind blacksmithing. I also liked the coin-striking and the chainmail making.
Oboe Shopping! The Yamahas were definitely not my favorite. There was one that had a plastic lined upper joint; it had a really nasty, almost buzzing kind of sound. The Howarth was great; it had a rich, dark sound well suited to Elegiac Dance by Michael Head. The Loreé is much brighter and sounded really nice on the faster movement of the Marcello oboe symphony. I tried oboes until there were only two left. I really liked the Howarth, but I’m going to give both the Loreé and the Howarth a chance.

--Amanda

Classes for the month of June

June 5:

10:30-12:00 Stash Buster Scarf (1/2)
12:30-2:00 Beginning Spinning
2:30-4:30 Knitting Cohort (1/3)

June 12:

10:30-12:00 Stash Buster Scarf (2/2)
2:30-4:30 Knitting Cohort (2/3)

June 19:

10:30-12:00 Beginning Socks (1/3)
12:30-2:00 Plying Handspun
2:30-4:30 Knitting Cohort

Beginning Socks will also be on July 10 & 24 at 10:30-12:00p.

The Stash Buster Scarf is a beginning knitting project--must be able to cast on, bind off and knit. Sign up for the whole month ($20.00 plus tax) and come each Saturday to work on a project of your choosing. Several weeks there will be skill builder sheets, so consider bringing a 3-ring binder to put them all in. Each will cover a technique that you may not be familiar with. There are two time options to sign up for with 7 slots in each.

10:30-12:00pm
2:00-3:30pm

We are considering adding an evening of spinning--i'd love to hear from anyone what night would be best.

In addition there will be a plying class on April 10th from 4-5pm. This class is a follow-up for basic spinning. please bring a spindle full of spun singles and we'll ply it! Each Saturday there will be two class sessions

10:30am-12:00 and 2:00pm-3:30. Each class has 8 seats.

the classes will require that you register for the class ($20.00 a month). You are welcome to work on any project you wish, but there will be knitting support and i will regularly bring in a mini skill builder. The skill builder will take about 20 minutes and will cover a single technique. the skill builder will have a handout to accompany, and the skills might be anything from kitchener stitch to knit one below to threaded stitch. Otherwise, each member of the class will work on whatever project they choose. sometimes, the groups may select a single project to work on together, other times, each work on a project of their choice.

Your seat will be held whether you are able to attend each class session or not, so you register and pay for a full month at a time.

I expect these two sections to fill up quickly, and i may be adding a Tuesday afternoon section if there is enough interest.

Call or email the shop to reserve a spot!

We're also going to start another class option: Build Your Own Class. this class allows you to pick your own project, get at least 3 friends and we'll do the project together! Again, call or email the shop to build your class!

Spinning Corner

what's new at the shop this week is a corner of spinning supplies, roving and batts and spindle kits! come on in and check it out!

Jan. We will be doing a Charity Knit-in! The goal is to get many people to show up and knit for Charity. I'll be following up with more definitive details soon! (hopefully the NICU here is willing to take donations).

After that classes will start on May 5th. this first set of classes is a "beginning level" project, that will be suitable for absolute beginners if they're interested. We'll be knitting either a sampler scarf (or a throw). Either way, we'll be practicing knitting and purling and cast on, as well as learning a number of interesting stitches. everything from Garter stitch to Cables as we move along! 10 sessions total!

Then on May 9th (a Saturday) we'll be doing a class on on-line knitting resources. it will concentrate on web sites that offer free and or down-loadable patterns, as well as how to use Ravelry (provided we get permission) and Flickr. i think it will be great fun!

We're making plans for our first Teen Knit Night. we'll have a movie, small snacks and a small project or two to go with the movie. If you know a teen knitter, let them know... and make plans to attend!

In June we'll be starting Sock Classes. Sock class will be 4 class sessions. (the last will be primarily a follow-up/wrap up class.

We're getting little bits of new stuff in the shop. new Castle Fibers sock is arriving momentary, new SuperLamb in wonderful spring/baby colors, and some new Sport Weight Heathered. Oh and of course... MORE NEEDLES!

world wide knit in public day!

So, on June 13, 2009, we're thinking we need to participate in WWKIP day!
