Happy November

I hope this finds all of you warm and healthy! It's been an interesting and busy Sept. and Oct. Amanda has moved to Vermillion to attend colllege and I've hired Katy to help out a few hours each month. She's marvelous and comes with some amazing skills that i can't wait for her to share with all of you!

During Nov. starting this Sat. we will be starting to have a knitting cohort again--this group will meet from 2:30-4:00pm. cost of the cohort is $25.00/month and includes knitting/crochet support if you need it. This won't substitute for beginning to knit/crochet classes, but if you have a project you'd like to work on, this is the perfect group for you. Either Katy or I will be on hand to help out and offer all the support in terms of how to with a project that we can, from selecting the right yarn to blocking!

November also bring Thanksgiving and Black Friday! We'll be opening at 8am on Nov. 26 and there will be specials all day long as well as a drawing at the end of the day for a gift certificate and several skeins of yarn. Come in Nov. 26, to register! also, get your name in the drawing an additional time for each $25.00 spent in from Nov. 3-Nov. 26!

Happy Thursday!
Music Camp was awesome.
John Matthews, a counselor, knows some really good band geek jokes:

“How do you know a trombonist’s kid is on the playground?
He can’t swing and he complains about the slide.”

“What is the definition of a minor second?
Two oboes playing in unison”

He had a joke column on the camp news wall. The “news” was mostly gossip and joking about things that had happened.
The Viking Village demo was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed watching the indigo dye-pot’s oxidation reaction. we know that Vikings used a dye that contained indigotin, which is also found in woad, a dye plant indigenous to Europe. The Vikings could have easily traded for indigo extracts from China or Japan. We forgot lime to make the madder red. The madder dyed some really nice peachy colors despite that. We know that the Vikings definitely used madder, which is also indigenous to Europe. The weld gave a pretty nice yellow. We haven’t yet identified the yellow the Vikings dyed with; it could be that the plant is extinct. Watching Daria cook was almost as fun as eating the food after it was finished cooking. Yum, salmon! The period forge was interesting and I learned a lot. I didn’t know much about the science behind blacksmithing. I also liked the coin-striking and the chainmail making.
Oboe Shopping! The Yamahas were definitely not my favorite. There was one that had a plastic lined upper joint; it had a really nasty, almost buzzing kind of sound. The Howarth was great; it had a rich, dark sound well suited to Elegiac Dance by Michael Head. The LoreĆ© is much brighter and sounded really nice on the faster movement of the Marcello oboe symphony. I tried oboes until there were only two left. I really liked the Howarth, but I’m going to give both the LoreĆ© and the Howarth a chance.

the new place

On May 2 we're moving to a new location downtown. we got to go look, the work is not all done, but i wanted to introduce you to the space. :-)

this is the front window--i can't wait to start having a place for real displays :-)

all this lovely slat board will be used to hang yarn--i'm excited about having all those little separate spots to hang different weights of yarn.

more pics of our little slat board areas...

this is our backroom--we will be designating this as a "work room/classroom". that's the bathroom in the corner.

We're Moving!!

We've gotten a wonderful new shop location and will be moving around May 1. We will be moving from our current location to 519 Main Street... if you're familiar with Rapid City, this is where Red Wing shoes used to be located, just two doors down from Botticelli's!

While we've been very happy where we are, we've decided we need to move on to a bigger space that is more centrally located. Be sure to stop in and see us.

also, we still have spaces available for our April Cohorts. (both the 10:30-noon one and the 2:00-3:30 one).

Good morning!

April classes will look just like the March classes did. Sign up for the whole month ($20.00 plus tax) and come each Saturday to work on a project of your choosing. Several weeks there will be skill builder sheets, so consider bringing a 3-ring binder to put them all in. Each will cover a technique that you may not be familiar with. There are two time options to sign up for with 7 slots in each.

10:30-12:00pm
2:00-3:30pm

We are considering adding an evening of spinning--i'd love to hear from anyone what night would be best.

In addition there will be a plying class on April 10th from 4-5pm. This class is a follow-up for basic spinning. please bring a spindle full of spun singles and we'll ply it! ($5.00)

thanks so much
Candis, Amanda and Rita

Feb & March classes

Hi!

Feb. Classes are going to be very limited as we will be closed Feb. 11-13, and Rita will be out of the shop Feb 19-20.

Clearance Sale: all sale yarn is buy 3 get one 4 during the month of Feb. Come on in and help us clear out our overstock!

Feb. 6 10:30-12:00 Beginning Spinning ($5.00 plus supplies)
Feb. 6 2:00-4:00 Beginning Knitting ($5.00 plus supplies)
Feb. 27 2:00-4:00 Beginning Knitting ($5.00 plus supplies)

Starting in March Classes will be a bit different. Each Saturday there will be two class sessions

10:30am-12:00 and 2:00pm-3:30. Each class has 8 seats.

the classes will require that you register for the class ($20.00 a month). You are welcome to work on any project you wish, but there will be knitting support and i will regularly bring in a mini skill builder. The skill builder will take about 20 minutes and will cover a single technique. the skill builder will have a handout to accompany, and the skills might be anything from kitchener stitch to knit one below to threaded stitch. Otherwise, each member of the class will work on whatever project they choose. sometimes, the groups may select a single project to work on together, other times, each work on a project of their choice.

Your seat will be held whether you are able to attend each class session or not, so you register and pay for a full month at a time.

I expect these two sections to fill up quickly, and i may be adding a Tuesday afternoon section if there is enough interest.

Call or email the shop to reserve a spot!

We're also going to start another class option: Build Your Own Class. this class allows you to pick your own project, get at least 3 friends and we'll do the project together! Again, call or email the shop to build your class!
